New or Remanufactured – What are they and which is the right choice for you?
Purchasing a new battery gives you a better warranty and higher confidence, but is a more expensive option. Selecting a remanufactured battery is lower cost and much better for the environment, offset by a reduced warranty term.
New Battery Option
A new battery is pretty much what you think. Your battery pack is removed and replaced by one with all new cells inside it. The warranty on these is typically 3yrs/200,000km.
On some vehicles you can choose between cylindrical or prismatic cells. What is the difference?
- Cylindrical cells: Good for power output, durability, and relatively easy to manufacture, typically lower cost.
- Prismatic cells: Good for energy density, space efficiency, and flexibility in packaging.
Remanufactured Battery Option
A remanufactured battery is essentially made up from a selection of previously used cells tested and found to be in good condition. They are then ‘matched’ with others in similarly good condition and a process of rebalancing undertaken to bring the performance of the pack as close as possible to that of a new one.
As these are re-using cells, it is a fantastic outcome for the environment and cheaper for you. The warranty on these is typically 3 years/40,000km.
